Wind and solar power surpassed fossil fuels in the EU

In 2025, wind and solar power generated more electricity than fossil fuels in the European Union for the first time, accounting for 30.1% of the mix compared to 29% for fossil fuels. This development marks a “tipping point” in the European energy transition. Solar power was the main driver of this growth, with production almost doubling in five years. At the same time, coal continues to decline sharply, reaching a historic low. The development of batteries and networks should support the continued growth of renewables and strengthen the EU’s energy independence.
